As a student of the BS degree in criminal justice administration, you will be educated in how to deal with human relations and resolve social conflicts, besides learning how to use the latest technology to detect, solve, and fight crime. Your work in a position of importance and reliability will involve working with subordinates, peers, and superiors. This program will inculcate in you the competence needed for interpersonal communication, administrative decision-making and personnel management. Professionalism on the job and the moral ethics that govern the profession are also dealt with in the curriculum.

The undergraduate course is a good stepping-stone for professionals in the criminal justice field who are seeking to advance their careers or branch into a diverse specialization. The course includes subjects like Organized Crime, Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice, Skills for Professional Development, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Criminology, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Interpersonal Communications, Introduction to Policing, Criminal Court Systems, Introduction to Corrections, Juvenile Justice, Ethics in Criminal Justice, Cultural Diversity in Criminal Justice, Research methods in Criminal Justice, Organizational Behavior and Management, Criminal Justice Administration, Criminal Justice Administration, Criminal Justice Policy Analysis, Managing Criminal Justice Personnel, Futures of Criminal Justice, and an Interdisciplinary Capstone Course. The Master of Science in Administration of Justice and Security prepares undergraduate students and professionals in the criminal justice field for administrative roles in criminal justice and security programs. Promotions and transitions across the various areas of criminal justice like law enforcement, corrections, security, and court operations are easily facilitated if you have a master’s degree in a related discipline. This program will train you in problem-solving techniques in security and justice organizations.

The degree includes courses such as Survey of Justice and Security, Organizational Administration and Behavior, Management of Institutional Risk, Ethics in Justice and Security, Criminological Theory, Legal Issues in Justice and Security, Critical Incident Management, Cyber Crime and Information Systems Security, Public Policy Issues, Concepts of Physical and Personal Protection, Forensic Science and Psychological Profiling, and Program Development and Evaluation. The problem is: while the courses sound good what you will really get is more of management education rather than more of criminal justice education. If you are opting for UoP, be ready to expect a management orientation rather than a criminal justice orientation. The sharp focus on criminal justice is missing.

Criminal justice is an interdisciplinary major that focuses on crimes, laws and the operations of the judicial system. Criminal justice majors can expect to take classes in statistics, the philosophy of law, forensics and criminology. At most schools, criminal justice programs prepare students for a career in law enforcement, usually at the state level. Some programs offer internships with the local police department; these opportunities provide hands-on experience and can often lead to job placement upon graduation.

A criminal justice major can also prepare students for graduate work in more specialized areas, such as forensic analysis and criminology. These degrees, usually offered at the master’s and doctorate levels, are the best bet for people who wish to work in more advanced jobs, like those featured on television. Be prepared, however, to conduct research, perform lab experiments, read through piles of court cases and commit another one to six years to your education (on top of the four years required for a bachelor’s program).

Alternatively, students can also obtain a two year Associate’s degree in criminal justice at a community college. This degree opens doors into law enforcement, corrections and parole. Students can expect to find work as paralegals, tax collectors, rehabilitation counselors and court clerks.

What are my chances of getting a job with a criminal justice degree?

Anyone hoping to be employed in the criminal justice field needs to be armed with more than just a degree. Though your chances of employment increase exponentially if you have a degree in any area of criminal justice and law enforcement, most jobs in this sphere require a high level of physical fitness and moral fiber. Your chances of getting a criminal justice related job are virtually zero if you have a checkered past; a clean record is an absolute necessity. You will be subject to a series of oral, written and psychological tests if you are aspiring to enter the police force. Training at a police academy is also mandatory. Since most positions in this field involve a certain amount of responsibility and accountability, you will be on probationary period during which you will be monitored and evaluated before you are employed full-time.

Your marketability to potential employers increases if you pursue internship programs during your study period as this helps you gain valuable on-the-job experience. While top grades are an asset, it is your work in related services that makes a more favorable impression. To enhance your chances of success in the job market, get involved in voluntary programs that relate to the field of criminal justice.

If you have a keen eye for detail and a sharp mind that can solve crime, you will probably stand a good chance of being employed in fields like forensic criminology and crime scene investigation.

Prerequisites for employment may be more stringent in federal and state agencies than in the private sector, which has openings in the fields of security and investigation.

Any associate degree or certification program will only take you up to a certain level in the professional playing field, so it makes sense to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree if you are eyeing a managerial or supervisory position.

A master’s or doctoral degree will be useful if you wish to be employed as a member of the teaching profession. This is usually valuable towards the end of an active career in any area of law enforcement.

Thus, given the fact that according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics employment in careers associated with criminal justice are likely to be the fifth highest growing among all professions, your chances of getting a job is the fifth highest among all careers in the country provided you meet all the other requirements essential for a career in criminal justice.

How long does it take to graduate with a degree in criminal justice?

Online criminal justice programs usually lead to associate level degrees, bachelor level degrees or master level degrees. At most schools you will need to complete on average 60 semester credit hours for an associate level degree or a master level degree and about 120-128 semester credit hours for a bachelor level degree.

Each course comprising on average 4 semester credit hours will take anywhere between six to twelve weeks to be completed and you will have to spend a minimum of 12-15 hours a week to keep up with the coursework. Of course, this will mainly depend on the program you sign up for and the institution you choose to do your criminal justice degree from, whether you are a full time student or a part-time one and your own pace of work.

But an online program of a properly accredited college or university will roughly take more or less the same time to complete as a similar degree from a traditional college or university – about two years for an associate or master’s degree and about 4 years for a bachelor’s degree.

Some institutions offer students the option of accelerating the course if they so wish. You will need to find out if your institute offers this option before enrolling for the program of your choice. If you are someone who can find some spare time beyond the class schedule, this would be a good choice since online study material and class assignments are all accessible 24 hours a day in case of those programs that are fully online.

The time taken to complete a degree may be less if the institution you are enrolled in allows you to get credit for your job experience or any on-the-job training that you may have undergone. Not all online colleges or universities offer this option but there are some who do.

In case you are a working adult and have considerable job experience and on-the-job training, you can often complete an online degree in almost half the time compared to non-working adults wishing to complete the same degree or the time that will be required in traditional colleges or universities for the same degree.

This is one of the biggest advantages of online degrees for working adults with considerable professional experience and on-the-job training.
