Trying to Decide if you Should Attend Graduate School – Ask yourself These Questions First

While every individual has their own reason or reasons for choosing to attend graduate school, there are two main reasons that usually come into play. The two most beneficial reasons for choosing to attend graduate school are:

1. To pursue careers in law, medicine, and university teaching an advanced degree is a requirement.

2. Professionals who wish to advance their careers receive in-depth training and acquire advanced skills in their area of study. Sometimes the purpose of gaining this knowledge is for personal growth and development and sometimes it is for career advancement and development.

So ask yourself these burning questions. The “why” you should attend graduate school just may appear while you are going through this little self-quiz. The answers to the questions will help you to analyze your own reasons for considering earning an advanced degree.

What kind of career do I want to pursue? Does this career choice require a graduate degree?

Certain career paths do require graduate degrees. If you want to be a doctor then there is no way around it. You will have to go to graduate school. Maybe you do not know what career you wish to pursue in the long run. That’s ok. Many graduates with bachelor degrees enter the workforce to gain experience to help them figure out what they truly want to do with their lives. After a few years (or sometimes more) these professionals may go back to school to earn their graduate degree for one of the two main reasons listed above.

Am I interested and motivated by the area of specialty that I would be pursuing?

While undergraduate school requires you to choose a major, the course of study offered to you is the broad and the basic knowledge of that study area. The focus of study in a graduate program is much more narrow on a specialty or specific area of interest. If you have no desire to further explore this area of study, then graduate school may not be the place for you. If you feel motivated and excited by delving into the depths of the specialty, then graduate is an option for you.

What types of job positions are advanced degree candidates in my area of interest currently involved in?

Do a little research and find out what graduates of your area of study are doing now. What type of achievements have they made? Where are they currently working? What do their jobs entail? Many colleges and universities publish this information about their graduates. You can also find companies that have positions that you are interested in pursuing and read biographies of their officers and directors, owners, and employees. This biographical information usually lists the degrees that they hold. You may even be able to contact school alumni or professionals to ask them questions about attending graduate school with relation to their current job position, etc.

Graduate school is not a place for everyone. You have to have the desire, motivation, and willingness to learn and take on new experiences. There are benefits to attending graduate school, but it is important to make sure that they are actual benefits to your personal situation.

Why Should You Get an MBA Degree?

No matter what industry you’re in you can benefit from having an MBA degree. Getting an MBA degree can prepare you to be a manager or qualify you to be promoted to an executive position within the company that you work for. You could even learn how to start your own business and work yourself if you have an MBA degree. The biggest reason to get an MBA degree though is because you can earn more money if you have an MBA degree. Statistics have shown that a college graduate with a business degree can expect to earn about $45,000 as a starting salary but a graduate with an MBA can except to earn about $75,000 as a starting salary. Companies know that employees with MBA degrees are going to be an asset to the company and can really help shape the company and guide the company so that the company continues to grow and flourish. People that have MBA degrees usually have the skills and the expertise and the contacts to really move a company forward and most of the time companies are willing to pay high salaries to attract competent employees with an MBA degree. Over the course of an entire career the difference between what your salary will be if you just have a four year degree and what your salary will be if you have an MBA degree can be huge. Wouldn’t you rather invest the time and money into getting an MBA degree and collecting big over the course of your career instead of just sticking with a four year degree and staying stuck in the same rung of the salary ladder for your whole career?

With so many different online MBA programs to choose from it’s never been easier or more convenient to get an MBA so why put off enrolling in an MBA program? You can boost your earning potential by thousands of dollars and move your career to the next level of success just by getting an online MBA degree. If you work in a company that offers tuition reimbursement for continuing education you might not even need to pay for your MBA. Lots of companies these days will reimburse their employees for any education expenses if that education is going to directly benefit the company and certainly getting an MBA would be an asset to any company. Since you would be putting all the skills that you learn in the MBA program directly into helping the company that you work for progress chances are good that your employer would be willing to pay for at least part of your MBA degree if not all of your MBA degree although you might have to agree to stay with the company for a certain period of time if the company pays for the MBA degree. Companies that do offer tuition assistance or tuition reimbursement will often ask you to sign a contract agreeing to stay employed for a set time period, usually at least a year, after getting an MBA degree. That way the company can be sure that you won’t take the MBA degree that the company paid for and quit to go work for another company.

Online Graduate Schools – 5 Reasons Why you Should Attend One

Online graduate schools are becoming increasingly popular, as people want to earn their degrees, but just can’t find the spare time to do it. More and more colleges and universities are offering distance learning programs to make it more convenient for students to take their classes and earn their degree online. Online graduate schools make it more convenient for students to earn their degrees without ever having to step foot on a college campus. With less free time and the convenience of earning graduate degrees online, more and more students are turning to an alternative to the traditional on-campus degree programs.

Students who wish to attend graduate school online will need to have access to a computer that is hooked up to the Internet. Online programs allow students to interact with their teachers in an online format either by email, online discussion groups or chat rooms. Students either receive their assignments via email or in an online forum that the teacher sets up for students to access their assignments. Online graduate programs are great for students who are self-motivated and do not need the interaction with professors and peers to get through their classes. Online programs also allow students to work at their own pace, at least to some degree. Once an assignment has been completed, students can move on to the next assignment. Online graduate programs are flexible so that students can sign-on to their computers at a time that is convenient for them.

5 Reasons to Attend Graduate School Online:

1. Flexibility — Online graduate programs are more flexible than on-campus programs. While on-campus programs require students to attend classes on a schedule, online graduate programs allow students to crate their own schedule. Since students do not have to physically be in a classroom, they can “attend class” anywhere that they like such as at home, in their office, or on vacation (as long as they have access to a computer that is hooked up to the Internet).

2. Fits into schedule — Many graduate students continue to work their full-time jobs while earning their degree. Instead of having to fit the class schedule of an on-campus program into their work and family life, they can work on their online graduate classes around their work and home life.

3. Study at own pace — Since online graduate schools have assignments and lessons posted online for students to access, once an assignment has been completed, students can move on to the next assignment. There are no other students or glitches to hold you back once you have successfully completed your task.

4. Never have to step foot in a classroom – With an online graduate program, there are no commute times or parking problems because students never have to step foot inside of an actual classroom. Class meetings and lessons are completed virtually, so students can “attend” class without ever having to leave their home or office.

5. Convenience — Attending graduate school online is convenient for students. Since everything is provided online via email or online posts, there are no inconveniences that go along with an on-campus program. Students may not even have to go to a bookstore to buy there textbooks because they can order them online and have them shipped right to their door.

These are just 5 reasons why students should consider attending an online graduate program versus an on-campus program. While an online graduate program is not right for everyone, it is becoming a more popular way to earn a graduate degree because it meets the needs of students who continuously run short on time to fit in going to an on-campus graduate program.

Organizations for Graduate Student – 5 That Should be Considered

Graduate students are busy people. They are busy with their coursework. They are busy with their research. They are busy with their thesis. And in some cases they are busy with their family and work life. It is important though that graduate students take time out of their busy schedules to become involved in organizations that will help them while they are graduate students and beyond. Colleges and universities have so many student organizations to choose from that it can be difficult to even narrow down organizations that may be most beneficial to a graduate student and their goals.

While this is definitely not an all inclusive list, here are 5 graduate organizations that students should consider becoming a part of to add to their graduate student experience to help shape and refine them as professionals. This list is no particular order.

#1 Part-Time MBA Association

This organization is dedicated to representing MBA students that go to school on a part-time basis. Students who are earning their MBA on a part-time basis have different concerns than those who are attending a full-time program. This organization acts as the liaison between the students and the college or university. As a member of this organization students are able to take part-time MBA student issues to the school of business administration and its faculty. This organization works for the good of the part-time student body to help improve the quality of the education that they receive, the amount and quality of academic support, and the professional services and advice that students can receive. By joining this group MBA students will find a sense of community among their peers, while continuously trying to improve student relations.

#2 MBA Association

The MBA Association’s goal is to provide a community where graduate students can interact through activities and services that allow their members to grow as students and as professionals in the business world. This group acts as a liaison between current students, Alumni and faculty to help students define their career goals, strengthen their skills, and develop a strong network of professional peers.

#3 Graduates As Parents

According to the Census Bureau the amount of graduate students attending college that are also parents increases by 60 percent each year. By becoming a member of this organization, graduate students will find a community of their peers that are balancing their family life with their school life. Through their peers members can pick up pertinent information regarding daycare, how to balance their lives, tips and trick for the juggling act, etc. With all of the stress that being a parent brings combined with all of the stress that being a graduate students brings, this group will allow students to de-stress their lives by surrounding themselves with like-minded people who are going through the same challenges that they are.

#4 Graduate Student Government

Graduate Student Government works on graduate student’s behalves in the area of student affairs and financial affairs that affect graduate students. This organization is the liaison between graduate students and the university on matters with housing, parking, fees, and transportation. This organization also helps students to learn the ins and outs of running an organization, including problem-solving resolution skills. It also provides a place for students to interact with leaders in the organization and in the school to acquire and foster their leadership skills.

#5 Graduate Students in _____________ (insert specialization here)

Whatever the graduate student’s specialization is, they should also consider joining the graduate student association for their specialization. The goal of these organizations is to provide a community where graduate students specializing in a particular field can interact through activities and services that allow their members to grow as students and as professionals in their field. These groups also act as liaisons between current students, Alumni and faculty to help students define their career goals, strengthen their skills, and develop a strong network of professional peers.

I’m deferring my undergraduate loans and start graduate school in Jan. 2010. Should I still make payments?

I graduate in December 2009 with my BA in Anthropology. I recently was accepted into JHU’s MA Museum Studies program. I just submitted the paperwork to defer my undergraduate loans with Direct Loans (FAFSA). Even though I deferred my loans, should I start making payments? I have 14, 750 dollars in loans and my recommended fixed payment amount (prior to deferment) is $185 (to pay off in 10 yrs).
I do not have any credit card debt and my car loan was paid off in 2007. I was thinking of buying a new car though…..
